WHY AM I IN SCHOOL?
Has this question ever crossed your mind as a pupil or student? Though, it might sound in your mind like a common and very easy question to answer, but have you ever think deeply beyond your answers? I’m sure the question can be best answered by students with strategic plan for their future and not those that have been answering it the same way right from their tender age, without pulling together any effort to work towards it and see if truly that is their aim.
As a kid, to some extent, we were made to understand by parents the importance of school to our future. As we grow older, we are also to start working to pursue our dreams in order to prepare the future against tomorrow for prosperity, so also to avoid being eaten up by poverty.
Although, not only the literates succeed in life, but no matter what one does or how one made it, there will always be a hole in the heart of the person if he/she is an illiterate because the wish to be able to meet up with the standard of eminent and educated personalities in the society will become paramount on such person’s mind.
Its high time parents look in-depth to their wards minds and interests to avoid wasteful effort and time. In this new era, they shouldn’t bother pestering their wards on what course to study or what they wish for them to become in future.
As a pupil, it is important for parents to lead them to the right path, then as a student, it is better they give them privilege to decide on what to do about their lives. The only thing they require by that time is just advice from them. It is up to the students to take a step they think will be suitable for them.
The present condition of the world today, especially among students in Nigeria shows a great deal of how some of them have no slightest idea why they are in school, what they want to study not to talk of what they wish to become in future.
When I looked back at some of the happenings in schools, that was when I appraise and re-appraise the life of students, and observed that majority of them don’t know the reason they are in school, because of that, they live a life without purpose, operate in mediocrity while some slot in atrocities.
This state of affairs baffles me tremendously seeing students loiter in school premises, doing nothing other than gossip, flirt, engage in highly destructive discussions or arra ngements, some even desire pleasure in slandering their lecturers or taking refuge on their beds. Imagine a student before obtaining Ordinary National Diploma (OND), already had one or two sex tapes or had took part in killings and other evil conducts.
The most annoying part of this situation is that, apart from struggling to finance their education, some of their parents are out there careworn with the hope of having a child to diminish their hard labor some day. It’s so pathetic that some of them had already been withdrawn from school for very long, but decide to stay back to swindle themselves as well as their parents.
Nowadays, some of the students have no time for their academics, meanwhile, they have a lot of it to spare for merry making, constructive criticisms, violence, prostituting on and off campus and causing havoc around the school vicinity.
It is apparent that some categories of students are in school just to delight their parent; several students are there only to get certificates as a proof of going to school. Also, a number of them are to persist with their sex trades and violent acts, some are there only because they want to meet up with the standard of their friends.
Although, while the flippant students foot their thoughts on nonsense, dwelling on the notion that ‘’what will be will be’’ forgetting that destiny is contingent upon the action they take today, the indomitable ones are there seeing possibilities for the betterment of their future and how the society will benefit from it.
One fact I understood from all these, is that the unsuccessful students do occasionally what successful students do daily.
